Relationship Therapy

What services we provide

Sexual disorders, such as erectile disorder in men, and orgasmic disorder in women, cause emotional and physical stress, both to the person with the disorder and to his or her partner. These disorders are also a primary reason that couples seek counseling. Sexual disorders, involve difficulties with desire, arousal and orgasm, and in women may also include sexual pain disorders (dyspareunia, vaginismus). For men, peyronie’s disease is a noncancerous condition resulting from fibrous scar tissue that develops on the penis and causes curved, painful erections. It is helpful to point out that, many people experience problems like this from time to time, and part of the difficulty is in determining when a problem is considered a disorder, and ultimately when is it time to seek help from a professional.

Factors to Consider

Partner & Relationship Factors
Sexual disorders can impact relationships, so couples therapy may be beneficial and is highly recommended. It can help partners improve their emotional connection, address any relationship issues, and develop strategies to enhance sexual intimacy. Your therapist can assess and recommend certain lifestyle modifications that can contribute to improving sexual health. This may include addressing factors such as stress management, regular exercise, healthy diet, and adequate sleep. Additionally, reducing substance abuse and quitting smoking can also be beneficial.
Individual Factors
Some factors to consider in making a judgment as to whether a disorder is problematic is the age and experience level of the person, the frequency and chronicity of symptoms, and effect on overall functioning. There may also be a combination of the two. Your therapist can assess and recommend certain lifestyle modifications that can contribute to improving sexual health. This may include addressing factors such as stress management, regular exercise, healthy diet, and adequate sleep. Additionally, reducing substance abuse and quitting smoking can also be beneficial.
Biological Underpinnings
It is important to consider if sexual concerns are primarily physical or whether there are psychological factors. One consideration in regards to desire is if desire is spontaneous or responsive. Therapists at The EFT Counseling and Education Center work in tandem with medical professionals and will include that collaboration in your treatment plan. In some cases, medical interventions may be necessary. For example, surgical procedures may be an option for conditions such as erectile dysfunction or certain anatomical abnormalities. While your therapist is not your medical advisor, they will coordinate care with your doctor so that the treatment is seamless in addressing your whole health and physical and emotional balance.
